Seahawks cut LenDale White, who faces a drug suspension

Just a month after they exchanged fourth- and sixth-round draft picks with the Tennessee Titans for running back LenDale White(notes), the Seattle Seahawks have released the USC alum.

The Seahawks were thought to be interested in White's services for two reasons — new head coach Pete Carroll coached White at USC, and they lack a goal-line back or a bruising first-down back on the roster.

Despite the cast that White slimmed down to 220 pounds and was in the best shape of his football career, there were rumblings within the front office that White, who ran for 2,349 yards and 24 touchdowns in four seasons with the Titans, wasn't performing to the level expected by Carroll and general manager John Schneider. Schneider expressed the reason for the release like so: "It became apparent at this time that LenDale was not ready to be a member of the Seahawks. It just did not appear to be the right fit at this point in our program. We wish LenDale all the best with his future."

What we then learned, per Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network, was that White is facing a four-game suspension for a violation of the NFL's substance-abuse policy. No further details were available. According to La Canfora, the Seahawks were aware of White's possible suspension when they traded for him, and that was not the reason he was cut.

It's possible that the Seahawks hoped and expected that White would become a part of the team only to be disappointed and surprised by his work ethic. I would maintain that it's also possible that this move, coming as early in the preseason process as it does, is as much about sending a message to the team, media and fans about the New Pete Carroll as anything else.

Carroll is a self-aware guy and always has been — few coaches at any level are as astute when it comes to public perceptions — and he had to know the reputation that followed him back into the NFL from his decade at USC. A player's coach, a bit of a milquetoast, a guy that professional veterans wouldn't take seriously. But in cutting a player that he not only coached in college but also dealt for in his first draft back in the NFL, Carroll's telling the world that nobody, including the coach himself, is on scholarship. He has to get his new team to buy in, and this is one way to go.

As for White, who's always been up against it from a commitment perspective, this is a major blow. When the coach who benefited from your collegiate production casts you aside, that sends a very strong message to the rest of the league.

Kenechi Udeze is still a winner off the field

Former USC and Minnesota Vikings defensive end Kenechi Udeze(notes) is one person who didn't bail on the rest of his life because his primary dream didn't work out the way he wanted. Selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the first round of the 2004 draft, Udeze lived up to his standing as the nation's top prospect at his position for a while, registering five sacks in his rookie year and coming back from injuries to get five more sacks in his final NFL season of 2007.

Then, the bad news hit Udeze like a ton of bricks. He was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia -- cancer of the blood and bone marrow -- in February of 2008. He received a marrow transplant from his brother and began the long road back to health. Amazingly, he was able to take part in a few minicamp snaps in 2009, forging hopes of a comeback, before numbness and sensitivity his feet - a side effect of his chemotherapy - put an end to his NFL dreams once and for all.

That would have crushed a lot of people, but Udeze has always been intent on proving that he's not like most. He went back to USC, got his degree in sociology, and he's now working as the strength and conditioning coach for former USC offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian at the University of Washington. He's now in remission and living life as a father and husband.

"I think I had too many of those," Udeze said in a recent radio interview with a Seattle sports talk station, when asked if he'd ever had any "Why me?" moments. "From the day I stepped on the USC campus, I broke every record in the weight room. I lost 100 pounds just to start playing football. And to say that this would happen to me ... I just didn't understand. But with every day that goes by, and working with the kids here at the University of Washington, that my life is so much more meaningful and has so much more purpose now that I can affect so many more lives than just performing as a football player."

Now associated with Lance Armstrong's LIVESTRONG foundation, Udeze will take part in the LIVESTRONG challenge in Seattle on June 19th and 20th. "Over the past 13 years, the LIVESTRONG organization has raised more than $60 million for the fight against cancer," Udeze said. "When I was diagnosed, I was all for it - I would do all kinds of charity events. I try to do all that I can, because I feel that anyone who goes through what I had to deal with, and so many others have to, you feel that it's a duty and a responsibility. So, what we're trying to do is to inspire and empower individuals - families, friends, and co-workers - to come together and be united in this fight against cancer."

Kenechi Udeze always impressed as a player, but it's pretty obvious where his true strength lies - it's in his heart and soul, and in his need to help and inspire others as he has been helped and inspired. His is a remarkable story which becomes even more special as he finds himself further and further on from the playing field.

Patrick Crayton wants out of Dallas ... and he may have a point

After catching 50 passes in 2007, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Patrick Crayton(notes) has seen his totals decrease in each of the last two seasons - from 39 receptions in 2008 to 37 in 2009. Crayton's total yards and touchdowns actually increased in 2009, which would seem to indicate that more targets are in order. But the receiver corps in Dallas is ridiculously overstocked right now. There's Miles Austin(notes), last year's sensation, who led the team in yards and touchdowns.

Of course, there's tight end Jason Witten(notes), Tony Romo's(notes) most reliable target, who grabbed 94 footballs last year. And there's Roy Williams, the subject of the worst trade in Cowboys history, who caught a grand total of 36 passes on 86 targets and will make a base salary of $3.5 million plus a $9.5 million option bonus as part of a six-year, $54 million contract. Now, there's the additional presence of first-round pick Dez Bryant(notes), the former Oklahoma State phenom with amazing physical tools, who's intent on making his mark.

Problem is, there isn't enough room for everyone to get their targets, and you know how underutilized receivers tend to get. Crayton's never been a diva - of course, humility comes with the territory when you're a seventh-round pick in 2004 from Northwestern Oklahoma State. Still, he's made his unhappiness with his current situation very clear - he feels that the Cowboys are burying him in favor of inferior talent, and he wants out. This is what he said in a recent radio appearance:

"If I'm going to be with another team, I need to get used to another city, another franchise, a new coach, a new quarterback, a new coordinator, everything. Just a whole new environment. My wife and kids got to get settled in, got to get in schools and everything.

"I would love to have the opportunity to compete with another team versus

Chad Ochocinco makes one young fan's dream come true

Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco(notes), formerly Chad Johnson, may have a slight strain of the diva receiver characteristic, but there's a humanity that has always separated him from the Keyshawns and T.O.s of the world. You get the sense that when he struggles, it's more about finding his way and when he showboats, it's more about entertaining than a driving need to be obnoxious. If anyone doubted the true nature of the man, the video you're about to see, which was shot at the third annual gala fundraiser for the Children Mending Hearts organization in Hollywood, CA, should take care of that.

Nine-year-old Ruben St. Hilaire, Jr, who lives with this mother in a homeless shelter in New York City, received an autographed jersey from Ochocinco after sending a letter. He then sent a second letter that would have melted the heart of the hardest individual.

Mr. Johnson, you really make me happy. One of my goals in my future life is to be just like you when I grow up. I wonder who was your role model when you were little? I have three role model(s) in my life that's my mom, Mr. President Barack Obama and my favorite football player Mr. Chad Johnson. To me you are the best football player in the NFL. May God bless you and your family happy holidays.

Ruben's dream was to go to a football camp, and that particular prize was donated by Deion Sanders. Presenting the certificate for camp attendance, unbeknownst to Ruben, would be the very same Mr. Ochocinco. Ruben's hero was introduced after the young boy read his letter. Bonus - it was Ruben's birthday! Rich Eisen of the NFL Network set the scene at the podium, and what followed was a pretty great moment.

If that wasn't amazing enough. Ochocinco then led the crowd in a verse of "Happy Birthday" for his biggest fan. It was an amazing day for Ruben St. Hilaire, Jr, and probably a pretty special for Chad Ochocinco, as well.

The game, Blur, is a game that came out today for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. After one day, gamers have liked what they have seen of this racing game. Here is a review that has been given to the game:

“There are multiple gameplay modes at hand here, but the primary one is combat-focused racing. You face off with up to 19 white-knuckled adrenaline junkies and try to complete a number of laps around a variety of circuits faster than everyone else while staying out of trouble and out of those 19 sets of crosshairs. Scattered about the courses are icons representing each of the eight power-ups available, like the fire-and-forget shunt, the shock attack, mines, turbo boosts, and shields. Most projectiles can be fired forward or backward and it’s important to use them in both directions. Focus entirely on what’s ahead and an opponent will quickly fill your tailpipe with fire and brimstone, but keep your head on a swivel and you might make it for 30 seconds or so without getting blasted

Video: Dez Bryant is Charles Barkley's favorite football player

By Chris Chase

Tuesday night on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" (we'll pause so the Team Coco legions can boo and hiss), NBA great Charles Barkley discussed his new favorite NFL player:

The Dez Bryant-Jeff Ireland beef is almost a month old but, on a show that still features Leno making jokes about Bill Clinton, that passes for breaking news. I particularly like how Michael Douglas has no idea where Barkley's story is going and then, relieved that it didn't go as far as he imagined, claps that Bryant didn't "beat the hell" out of Ireland.

SNL's Super Fans to reunite with Ditka in Chicago

As far as festivals go, any one that includes Mike Ditka has to be better than Woodstock, Mardi Gras and Cannes put together. So, get ready Chicago, coach Ditka is coming to your city this summer and bringing some of his biggest fans.

Saturday Night Live's Super Fans, the beer-drinking, Ditka-loving, sunglasses-wearing Chicagoans who love all things Bears, Bulls, Blackhawks and Cubs, will reunite in June to stage a live reading of a never-produced screenplay from the mid-'90s. The script was written by original SNL writer and original Super Fan Robert Smigel (the guy who does Triumph the Insult Comic Dog) and Mr. Show co-creator Bob Odenkirk. The script featured the Super Fans lamenting the sale of the Bears and the conversion of Soldier Field into a sea of luxury boxes. It never got the greenlight from Paramount.

On June 19, Smigel and Odenkirk will lead a live reading of the script along with original Super Fans George Wendt and Joe Mantegna, as well as film critic Richard Roeper, who will serve as the narrator. Mike Ditka will appear as himself.

The reading will serve as a benefit for two groups: Have Dreams: Helping Autistic Voices Emerge, and the Gridiron Greats Assistance Funds. It's part of a larger comedy festival in the city. The Just For Laughs festival also features Ellen DeGeneres, Cedric the Entertainer, Denis Leary and Aziz Ansari. Good thing Ditka is limiting himself to one day of performances, or else he'd have overshadowed the whole thing. He truly is a compassionate Ditka.

Darnell Dockett showered live online for money, and is sorry

By MJD

So, this happened: Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman Darnell Dockett(notes) took a shower live on UStream to win a $1,000 bet.

I promise I am not making that up. In fact, I promise you, the reader, that I will never, ever make up any stories about defensive linemen bathing live online. That is a solemn vow.

I saw the story on SportsByBrooks a few days ago, but I chose to ignore it. No disrespect to Brooks intended here, but it's just one of those stories that felt weird, icky, and so unusual that it could also possibly be the work of a hacker or prankster. With that in mind, I didn't want to call attention to it and further embarrass Darnell Dockett on the off chance that it wasn't true or wasn't what it seemed.

There's not much point in holding back now, though, since Dockett admitted he did it, and apologized for it.

The good news and bad news of Daunte Culpepper's UFL landing

Daunte Culpepper(notes) is about to be employed as a professional football player once again. It won't be with an NFL team, though. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, it will be with the UFL's Sacramento Mountain Lions.

Not being able to land a job anywhere in the NFL, even as a third-stringer, has got to be difficult to accept for Culpepper, who most recently played quarterback for the Detroit Lions. We're talking about a two-time All-Pro, a three-time Pro Bowler and a guy who once graced the cover of Madden.

Now he's on a team that's also accepting players from open tryouts.

Here's the good news, though. Remember J.P. Losman(notes), former first-round pick of the Buffalo Bills? He washed out of the NFL, spent a year choo-choo'ing with the UFL's Las Vegas Locomotives, won the UFL title, and is now back in the bigs. He signed with the Seahawks on Tuesday.

So the UFL can be a path back to the big show. It would be nice to see Culpepper have a great year with the Mountain Lions — well, let's be honest, playing in the UFL, he might have a great year, but there's no chance I'll actually see it — and then Tommy Maddox himself back into the NFL.

I give Culpepper a lot of credit for burying his pride and taking the UFL gig. This is a guy who retired back in 2008 when he couldn't latch on with an NFL team, so taking the huge step down to the UFL can't be easy for him.

Best of luck down there, Daunte.

The petition to get Chris Johnson paid

As a society, we've been able to achieve so many amazing things through online petitions, like — wait, actually, I think I have that wrong. Yes. I do. It's actually nothing that we've accomplished through online petitioning.

But I don't want to ruin anyone's good time. There's a Chris Johnson fan out there who wants to start an online movement to try to convince the Tennessee Titans to redo Chris Johnson's contract, and I say more power to him. He's launched the PayCJ2K petition at ipetition.com, under the following statement:

Everyone seems to be getting a new contract but, why not the most exciting player in the league? Titans pay him! Show your support, lets help him get the money he deserves. Spread the word!

Chris Johnson himself even retweeted it, and as of this second, there are 945 signatures. I guess it's gathering a little steam.

I'm not going to sign it. First, because it's an online petition; and second, I try not to put a lot of effort into making already pretty rich people into super rich people.

It's not that I don't want Chris Johnson to get his money. I absolutely do. He has way, way, way outperformed his rookie contract, and given how short running-back careers can be, and the way teams are so quick to cast aside veteran runners these days, I'm all for the Titans giving Chris Johnson a ridiculous amount of money. And if Johnson has to hold out to get it, I'm all for that, too. Get yours, my man.

I just don't think an online petition is going to sway the Titans organization. Even if the sentiment is correct in this particular case, fan outrage voiced on the Internet generally doesn't change the mind of NFL front offices. That's probably a good thing.

Andre Johnson's unhappiness adds to Texans' drama

It was bad enough for the Houston Texans when they were dealing with Brian Cushing, the ramifications of what he did or did not take, and the resulting four-game suspension that will kick off Cushing's 2010 season. Now, receiver Andre Johnson(notes), the team's best player, is making noise about his contract. He's not happy about an eight-year, $60 million contract extension that he signed in March of 2007 that will pay him a base salary of $5.8 million this season. That base jumps to $6.8 million in 2011 and $7.3 million in 2012, narrows off to $7 million in 2013, and goes back up to $7.3 million in 2014. Add in $15 million in guaranteed money, and it sounds like a lot of scratch ... until you compare Johnson's contract with other recent receiver deals.

Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald(notes) signed a new deal in March of 2008, a four-year, $40 million contract that gave him $30 million guaranteed and $12.1 million in option and roster bonuses alone in 2009. Fitzgerald's base is $6.3 million in 2010 -- just half a million over Johnson's -- but it's the way in which the contract is structured that gives the advantage to Fitzgerald. Three-quarters of Fitzgerald's contract is guaranteed, while Johnson's guaranteed money comprises just one-fourth of his total deal. When Roy Williams signed a six-year, $54 million deal with the Cowboys upon his trade from the Lions in October 2008, he got more than $26 million guaranteed, including a $10 million option bonus in the second year. He has a couple of years in which the deal is voidable -- 2013 and 2014 have base salaries of over $8 million -- but Williams will earn far more than his on-field production has been worth.

And that's where Johnson is in the right. As great as Fitzgerald has been, there's little doubt that Johnson has been the NFL's most productive receiver over the last few years. Last season, Johnson was targeted 172 times to Fitzgerald's 153 and Williams' 86. As Houston's offense has gone extremely pass-heavy, Johnson has been the focus of every defense playing the Texans, and he's still been able to put up ridiculous numbers -- his 1,569 receiving yards led the league by more than 200 yards over New England's Wes Welker(notes). No receiver had more plays of 20 yards or more last season than Johnson's 22. In 2008, Johnson led the league in catches (115) and receiving yards (1,575). And Houston's overall game plan isn't going to change anytime soon, which means that Johnson will continue to be the pointman in that offense.

Johnson is currently absent from the Texans' OTAs, and General Manager Rick Smith has said that the team has a strict policy of refusing to negotiate with players who aren't present. Johnson negotiated that extension with the help of Andre Melton, his uncle and agent, and Melton was quoted as saying last season that he had an "exit strategy" for Johnson if the Texans didn't pony up. Johnson went on the record and disagreed with that notion, but he's got a point when it comes to his compensation. Perhaps step one is to hire a more experienced advisor to help him through the process.

Roy Williams needs another reality check

Ah, sweet athletic delusions of grandeur, where would we sportswriters be without them? We'd certainly be lacking many opportunities for comedic fodder, that's for sure.

Last November, we detailed the delusions of Dallas Cowboys receiver Roy Williams, who petulantly insisted that despite his status as a No. 1 receiver (ahem!), alleged No. 2 Miles Austin(notes) was eating his lunch because "things are just going No. 2's way ...

Revis Island could become a much more expensive destination

The New York Jets have had quite the busy little offseason. They've acquired Antonio Cromartie(notes), Santonio Holmes(notes), Jason Taylor(notes), and LaDanian Tomlinson. They've cut ties with veterans Thomas Jones(notes) and Alan Faneca(notes), two players who helped the team's running game to great success last season. They had an excellent draft, which started with Boise State cornerback Kyle Wilson(notes) unexpectedly falling to them at the 29th pick.

And now, they're talking to the NFL's best defensive player about what will most likely be a historic contract extension. Cornerback Darrelle Revis(notes), who played the position about as well as it can be played in 2009, is going into the fourth year of a six-year, $30 million contract. However, the language in the deal basically voids the final two seasons, making Revis a free agent after the 2010 season. The Jets could buy back the final two years for about $20 million,  but they'd probably want something more cap-friendly if there is a salary cap next year and beyond. This year, Revis will make a base salary of $550,000 plus assorted bonuses - which, if he plays like he did last season, is what he should make per game. The Jets are thinking the same thing. From NJ.com:

"They came to me after the season," Revis said. "There were talks about them not wanting me to play for a million dollars. They're trying to renegotiate. We'll see. Me and (center) Nick (Mangold) have talked. Nick wants to get something done as well. This dude is the best center in the league. He deserves what he deserves. I deserve what I deserve. (Linebacker) David (Harris) deserves what he deserves. ... It's just a matter of time when everything works out and everybody will be happy."

No doubt. As we've discussed before, Revis' contributions to the NFL's best pass defense were absolute. And if you go by what head coach Rex Ryan has said about him, Revis shouldn't worry too much about the Jets throwing major dollars his way.

"If someone really went back and broke it down, this award (Defensive Player of the Year) wouldn't even be close. Would not even be close on who should win. I do know something about defense, and I have never seen a cornerback have this kind of year, with one exception -- maybe Deion (Sanders) when he was with San Francisco (in 1994)."

What might be a good baseline for a new Revis contract? Denver's Champ Bailey(notes) signed a seven-year, $63 million contract with the Broncos in 2004 after he was traded from the Washington Redskins. Green Bay's Charles Woodson(notes) signed a seven-year, $52 million deal in 2006, and the Falcons inked former Houston Texans cornerback Dunta Robinson(notes) to a six-year, $57 million contract just two months ago.

It's arguable that Revis made more of a difference to his team than any other NFL player - and at age 24 (he'll turn 25 in July), it's a good bet he'll be in that argument for the next few seasons. The Jets were a player or two away from a Super Bowl bid last year, and they know they wouldn't have been that close without their best player. Chances are good that the team is about to tell Darrelle Revis just that in a language that everybody can understand.

In the original game of Kane & Lynch: Dead Men, there was a popular multiplayer mode that was called “fragile alliance.” This mode received great reviews and a lot of popularity. When the sequel to this game was eing made there was no doubt that this mode would be a part of it. Some improvements in the mode were completed.

The following is a preview of the “fragile alliance” mode from Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days:

“The potential for someone going traitor is always there, whether it be your teammates or yourself. If you do decide to go traitor, you could hang back and silently assassinate teammates — just make sure no one sees you do it. Or you can grab a human shield, keeping your teammates from shooting you by making it crucial for them not to accidentally shoot the buddy being used as a shield. If a teammate shoots a teammate, he can turn traitor, and the guy who gets wounded has a certain amount of time to get his revenge on the shooter without becoming a traitor himself thanks to a function called

Ex-NFL'er Matt Mitrone puts an end to Kimbo Slice's UFC career

On Saturday night, the Ultimate Fighting Championship hosted UFC 113 in Montreal, and one of the attractions on the card was Kimbo Slice. Kimbo, as you're probably aware, is the guy who has parlayed his backyard/YouTube fight exploits into an actual MMA career.

That career will be going backwards now, as Kimbo was soundly defeated by Matt Mitrione -- one of ours! Mitrione made second team All-Big Ten as a defensive end at Purdue (despite having Lucille Austero's haircut), and the New York Giants signed him as an undrafted free agent.

With the Giants, he played in nine games and recorded 2 tackles and 2 assists. A foot injury sidelined him for a bit, and two years later, he made the roster with the Vikings. He never actually got on the field there, though.

So he made mixed martial arts his next career choice, and there he was last night on pay-per-view, beating up Kimbo Slice.

The beating was so thorough, in fact, that it convinced UFC president Dana White to cut Kimbo from the roster entirely. After two fights, Kimbo is gone from the UFC, and Matt Mitrione is left standing with some newfound respect from the fight community.

Now, beating Kimbo Slice isn't going to win anyone any fighter of the year awards, but Mitrione showed that he had improved immensely in a short period of time. At the very least, he's now a legitimate prospect. He'll get more chances to fight, more chances to improve and an opportunity to stick with the UFC.

Ray Lewis to get a street in Baltimore named after him

Taking a page out of Green Bay's book with its Lombardi Avenue, Reggie White Way and Brett Favre(notes) Pass, the city of Baltimore will be renaming a city street "Ray Lewis Way."

The ceremony will take place on Tuesday with Lewis, Ravens head coach Jim Harbaugh and Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake on hand. They'll be renaming part of Baltimore's North Avenue.

The choice of location is slightly odd -- something like this usually happens around the stadium, where sports fans will have more of a chance to appreciate it. But North Avenue is where Ray Lewis'(notes) charitable foundation hosts an annual Thanksgiving giveaway, so it's certainly appropriate, too.

Also on the plus side for the location, North Avenue is nowhere near the Baltimore County Courthouse, so even if Ray's new street has to undergo massive construction, Ray Lewis Way can never obstruct justice.

Okay, I'm sorry about that. Forgive me. But there is likely to be some debate about the decision (or at least a parade of jokes), given Ray Lewis's involvement -- whatever it may have been -- in a double murder back in 2000. Lewis ended up pleading guilty to obstruction of justice.

Since then, Lewis has made himself a Baltimore hero, on and off the field. You know of his greatness on the gridiron, and you probably know of his many charitable acts, too.

Does he deserve the considerable honor of a street named after him? Who's to say? Certainly not me. It's not my city, it's not my street and it's probably unlikely that I'll ever set foot on Ray Lewis Way. If the people of Baltimore are behind the idea, I say knock yourselves out. Congratulations, Ray.

NFL voices dot SI's list of greatest all-time sportscasters

Sports Illustrated put together a slideshow of the "Top 20 All-Time Sportscasters." Most of the people on the list have worked NFL games at one point or another, but below are five in particular who are strongly linked with the NFL.

#20. John Madden. It's a little surprising that Madden isn't higher, but this list tends to skew towards play-by-play guys, as opposed to color analysts. Through the years, Madden made himself into America's default voice of professional football, and I doubt we'll ever have a more famous or more recognizable football commentator than him.

#15. Marv Albert. Marv is known as more of an NBA guy, of course, but I list him here because I think his NFL work on the radio is outstanding, and if he ever did have a high-profile network NFL gig, I'm certain that he'd be just as good there as he is in the NBA.

#14. Dick Enberg. Dick Enberg started calling NFL games on NBC in 1977 and is still going. He's called eight Super Bowls in his career.

#13. Al Michaels. Michaels and Cris Collinsworth currently call the unofficial "game of the week" on Sunday nights on NBC, and before that, Michaels called the shots when "Monday Night Football" was the biggest game of the week. I wouldn't call him a personal favorite of mine, but given his longevity and the sheer number of huge sporting events he's called, he's a natural for this list.

#9. Howard Cosell. Cosell's heyday was before my time, so I don't have a lot of perspective to offer here. Cosell gets a lot of credit for changing the world of commentary, adding more color and personality to the events.

It's a fine list, and obviously, extremely subjective. If you ask 100 sports fans to do something similar, you'll get 100 different lists. Everyone's got their own unique likes and dislikes.

I will say that I'd have liked to see Pat Summerall's name somewhere in the top 20. Everyone goes crazy today for Gus Johnson's super-emotional approach to things, and while I don't mind that, I think there's also something to be said for Summerall's bare essentials approach. He was the perfect complement to Madden, and vice versa.

Aside from that, I have few complaints about the list. I'd like to hear what you guys think, though, about NFL guys who should or shouldn't have made the list.

Winner of the Shutdown Corner Sweepstakes for flood relief ...

I want to thank everyone who e-mailed to entered the Shutdown Corner mini-Sweepstakes. I got some pretty amazing stories from people affected by the flood, and people who just really, really want to help. My most sincere thanks to all of you.

The winner is Tracy G. Harros of Texas. There were a ton of great entries to pick from, and really, it could've been anyone, but in the end, I wanted her and her son to have the Vince Young(notes) stuff. I think they'll appreciate it.

Again, if you'd like to donate through Vince Young's foundation, here's the link. You can donate any amount you want. It doesn't have to be $100; that just gets you the VY swag. In Nashville alone -- and 42 counties are official federal government disaster areas -- the damage is up to $1.5 billion and rising. I'm sure any help you could give would be appreciated.

Packers WR Greg Jennings might be the best actor on CBS

By MJD

Here's Green Bay Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings(notes) expanding his horizons and doing a little acting on CBS's "Criminal Minds." I think that's one of those groundbreaking new shows where good-looking cops track down bad guys based on miniscule clues they left. Man, TV needs more of those.

Anyway, here's Jennings playing Forensics guy "Tech Jennings."

Not bad at all, Mr. Jennings. I think if he kept working at his craft, when his career is over, he might be able to play one of those good-looking cops.

Gracias, PFT.

McNabb returns Jackson's barbs with some of his own

When Donovan McNabb(notes) left Philadelphia, he made sure not to burn bridges on his way down I-95 to Washington. Perhaps it's because he wanted to save that for later.

Days after his former receiver, DeSean Jackson(notes), told The Sporting News that he was "very happy" with the decision to trade McNabb to the Redskins and that he doesn't "think we lost anything" as a result, McNabb returned the barb with a passive-aggressive dig at his new NFC East rival.

"It's so wild when people get to talking when you're not there, but when you're there everybody loves you," McNabb said.

"So I guess people will go deeper into it than I will. I'm a Redskin, no longer an Eagle. I had 11 great years and I'm moving on with my life, so whoever may say things when I'm gone, more power to them, but it's not making you look like a bigger man."

Two things: First, I'm pretty sure everybody didn't love McNabb all the time when he was in Philly or else he wouldn't be in Washington right now. Second of all, I thought you weren't going to "go deeper into it," Donovan? Yet isn't that exactly what you did in the sentences following that statement? You can't stake out the moral high ground right before slinging mud. Adding something like "I shouldn't say this, but ..." doesn't give you immunity to say whatever you'd like after.

If you want to go after Jackson, do it. He deserves it. His comments were unnecessary, insulting and will follow him around incessantly should either he or Kevin Kolb(notes) get off to a slow start this year. It's like he set aside fuel to add to a fire that may or may not burn. But take a shot at him, don't cower behind empty words and a media that enables your martyr-complex. (ESPN.com actually wrote the following sentence in its write-up of the spat: "On Saturday, McNabb took the high road in responding to Jackson's comments.")

DeSean Jackson should think the Eagles will be better without Donovan McNabb and McNabb should think Jackson is wrong for believing that. But this is something to be decided on the football field. This stuff belongs in the sandbox.

Russell as a Raider, in one handy stat: $100,000 per completion

As he seeks an employment situation better than the one he had in Oakland (pro: the possibly deranged owner really believed in him; con: everything else), I really don't want to pile on JaMarcus Russell(notes).

But Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times went to the trouble of crunching JaMarcus's financial numbers alongside his actual on-field production. So, just as one final recap of the mercifully dead JaMarcus Russell era in Oakland, I'll pass these along. Here's how JaMarcus was compensated for his production with the Oakland Raiders:

Roughly $100,000 per completion and  $5.6 million per win.

For comparison's sake, Tom Brady's(notes) total salary last year was $8,007,280, which comes out to $21,583 per completion. Peyton Manning(notes) pocketed $14,005,720 last year, and made $35,638 per completion. They're all ridiculous numbers, but no one's are more ridiculous than those of JaMarcus Russell.

Farmer also suggests that Russell was a bigger bust than even Ryan Leaf, but I'll defend JaMarcus on that one. Leaf is head and shoulders above JaMarcus. If the Hall of Fame ever opens a special wing for the biggest draft disasters, it will be named the Ryan Leaf Center for Scaring The Bejeezus Out Of All Future Draft Prospects.

In total, Russell will pocket more than $39 million for his three years of work in Oakland. He's already been paid $36 million of that, and the Raiders still owe him $3 million more.

But that's the past. What's important for JaMarcus is the future, and I'm sure that someone will give him another opportunity, along with a more stable, positive work environment. He's got some changes he needs to make on his own, too.

The upside is that all of this provides him with the opportunity to become the greatest draft-bust-finds-redemption story ever. Maybe it's not quite the same opportunity he had as a first-overall draft pick, but it's something.

Releasing only for the console of the Sony PlayStation 3 is the game Little Big Planet 2. The date at which this game will be available for gamers has not been figured out yet but it is known that it will be some time at the end of this year. This game, that has been developed by Media Molecule, is a sequel to a game which was played by a lot of people.

The following is a preview that has been given to the game:

“So Little Big Planet 2, which Evans and Healey revealed at the event (in pre alpha form), is not a major departure from its predecessor – no “reboots” here. Rather than revamp the first game, Media Molecule is building on the Little Big Planet foundation, making the Little a bit bigger. Sackboy’s still here, as are the stickers and the Popit level creation interface. Little Big Planet 2 will even maintain backward compatibility with all those Little Big Planet 1 levels – in fact, they’ll look just a tad crisper and shinier with Little Big Planet 2’s refined graphics engine.”

Make sure to look into this game when the date that it will come out gets closer as there will be more details by then.

Recently released for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 is the game Iron Man 2. The date that this game came out was on May 4th. This game, that has been published by SEGA, is based off of the famous movie. In playing this game, you will be able to better experience the power that Iron Man has.

The following is a review that has been given to this game:

“The combat system is, likewise, well-conceived but joylessly executed. Iron Man’s attack powers are split between his left and right hands. You can assign two different weapon types to each side and change them on the fly by pressing the D-pad. Combat is built around a rough lock-on mechanic. In theory, it works like it would in most games: when locked onto an enemy, a translucent blue circle surrounds them and a green health meter is intertwined. The problem is that it’s impossible to hit a moving target with standard attacks, which renders it fairly useless, since lock-on mechanisms are designed to hit non-stationary enemies.”

Make sure to check out some more details regarding this game if you have the time.

Patriots not responsible for disappointed youngsters

UPDATE: As it turns out, the Patriots weren't at fault for disappointing any students. The New England Dairy Council, which also sponsored the event, is taking the full blame for the miscommunication. Gary Wheelock, the group's CEO, has apologized for the error, saying that they never meant to imply that actual players would show up. The videotape was the plan all along, but that got lost somewhere along the way.

Wheelock also said that the group will try to make amends to the kids, who took the whole thing in stride, as noted in the original post below. Wheelock also apologized to the Patriots for subjecting them to negative press.

That certainly includes this blog post, so I owe an apology, too, to the Patriots and their fans. I am very sorry.

---

A bunch of kids at Lebanon Middle School in Connecticut got fired up to participate in the NFL's "Fuel Up to Play 60" program -- more than half of the kids at the school, in fact.

And because their participation rate was so high, they thought they won the right to have some real, actual New England Patriots come to their school. I imagine the youngsters thought they'd be mingling with Tom Brady(notes), Randy Moss(notes), Wes Welker(notes) ... at the very least, a Tully Banta-Cain(notes) or a Julian Edelman(notes).

Nope. They got an intern. He brought some exercise videos. Enjoy, kids!

From NorwichBulletin.com:

The Fuel up to Play 60 Web site stated if enough students participated in the program, they would be rewarded with a gym session complete with New England Patriots, said

Pacman Jones gets two-year deal from Bengals

When he signs his new two-year contract today or Monday, the seemingly inevitable will happen - cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones will become a Cincinnati Bengal. And given Pacman's off-field history, and the Bengals' history of taking on troubled players, the only question is why it took so long for this to happen after Pacman tried out for the team in February. After displaying major skills with the Tennessee Titans in 2005 and 2006, Jones was suspended by the league for the entire 2007 season for a series of incidents in which he was interviewed by police. Jones' most notorious involvement was the strip club incident during the NBA All-Star weekend, when a fight and shooting left one man paralyzed. Given another chance by the Dallas Cowboys for the 2008 season, Jones was suspended six games that year for yet another scuffle, this time with a bodyguard provided by the team. In 2009, Jones was close to signing a contract with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League. But an outburst that became a viral video staple, in which Jones dug his own grave in many different ways, put an end to that speculation.

Now, this. The interesting thing about this phase of Jones' career is that the abilities which allowed him to give up the fewest yards per target in 2006 (5.4 YPC on 69 targets, according to Football Outsiders' metrics) were pretty much shot during his time in Dallas. Jones looked slow and out of place with the Cowboys, allowing 6.4 yards on 51 targets. After that lost 2007, Jones' passes defensed dropped from 14 to 9; his interceptions from four to zero. And he showed none of the dynamic return ability that also typified his Tennessee career.

The move is low-risk for the Bengals from a financial perspective -- it's a veteran minimum flyer with incentives (and certainly language allowing the team various out clauses in the event that Jones can't stay out of trouble). How Jones might meet those incentives, even if he's able to regain any percentage of his former skill set, is unknown. In Leon Hall(notes) and Johnathan Joseph(notes), the team already has one of the best cornerback tandems in the league - unless there's an injury, Jones would be a nickel guy at best. Perhaps there's some room in the return game, but this looks like a depth signing - the kind the Bengals do all the time. They'll bring troubled players in on short deals, hoping they can help, but it's a "churn-‘em-and-burn-‘em" game for the most part. All Jones can do is keep his nose clean and seize the opportunities on the field when they present themselves. He'll also have to forgive the skepticism regarding the notion that he's capable of either act at this point in his life.

Vikings rookie free agent overcomes darn near everything

A lot of hopeful rookies have overcome a lot of hardships to earn a crack at an NFL roster over the past couple of weeks, either through the draft or as undrafted free agents.

I'm sure there are a lot of rough stories out there. There probably aren't many rougher than the story of Bill Noethlich, though.

Judd Zulgad of StarTribune.com tells the story of Noethlich, a 6-7, 308-pound offensive lineman who just signed a contract with the Minnesota Vikings. He went undrafted but was invited to try out at the Vikings rookie camp. He ended up walking away with a contract.

That's the happy ending. Now let's rewind eight years.

Noethlich is 15 years old. That's when his mother died as the result of a car accident.

Depression set in for the youngster. His grades dropped. But then he sat down and had a heart-to-heart with his grandfather, who convinced him to lift himself up and try to become a football player. That's when his grandfather died.

Bill went on to college, though, and his father remarried. The new family built a house together, and they all moved in. That's when the family house burned down.

Bill continued on at college, though, studying and playing football. And that's when his sister Jennifer went into a diabetic coma, and she died.

And if triumphing over nearly unending sadness isn't enough for you, how about an underdog story on top of it? Noethlich played college ball at Southwest Minnesota State. The football they play there is nine-on-nine, which I didn't even know existed.

I'm not entirely sure how nine-on-nine football works, but I'm pretty sure that if you end up at a college where the football is nine-on-nine, the odds of you making the NFL are pretty long.

Back to the happy ending, though. Again, via StarTribune.com:

"There was just so much emotion after having something great happen to me," said Noethlich, 23. "I was hugging my parents and holding them as much as I could and enjoying this great moment, because we've had a few bad ones, that's for sure."

Said Bill's father, Dan: "You have no idea how proud we are of that kid. I don't know if you can put into words how proud you can be as a parent of somebody who has carried themselves to this level."

It would be phenomenal to see Noethlich go on to make the Vikings final roster, but that he's even come this far is downright awe-inspiring. Best of luck to him, and that entire family.

Recently, Guinness World Records came up with a list of the 50 best video game franchises. Voted upon by gamers, make sure to check out some of these if you have not yet.

“We decided to take a different approach with this list than we did in the previous edition,”  said a spokesperson for Guinness World Records. “Instead of asking developers, industry insiders and journalists to rank their favorite titles, we approached a different kind of expert: the players themselves! We are confident that this ‘top 50′ more accurately reflects the tastes of the average gamer and not just the critics.”

We've been down this road before, asking whether or not Ben Roethlisberger's(notes) behavioral issues could have been caused by repeated whacks to the head. Another expert has chimed in, though, and the more opinions, the better.

David Epstein of Sports Illustrated talked to Dr. Jordan Grafman, a neuropsychologist who specializes in frontal lobes, the part of the brain that controls "judgment, inhibition and social behavior." So what does the good doctor say?

"A person with damage might not read the intentions of a woman at a bar very well, for example," Grafman says. "They might succumb to more primitive urges instead of saying, 'I shouldn't do this because it affects my career.'"

Sound like anyone we know?

The other factor that points to all of this potentially being linked to frontal-lobe damage is Roethlisberger's reported history of doing and saying wildly inappropriate things. Examples of this are not scarce. According to Grafman, it's a common symptom of those who have suffered that particular type of brain injury. Their ability to know when things are appropriate and when they're not is eroded.

And again, there's the other possibility -- that Roethlisberger's simply a meathead with a grand sense of entitlement that might accompany truckloads of cash and the hero status we assign to Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks. Epstein doesn't ignore that possibility, either.

It's an unanswerable question. At least it is for me, you, and everyone else who hasn't known Ben Roethlisberger since he was an innocent, happy-go-lucky, young quarterback in Findlay, Ohio (if he indeed ever was that). And even if you have witnessed his behavior changing, you might not know why it's changed.

We'll never know definitively. And that's fine with me, because for one thing, I don't feel like I should know the man's personal medical history that intimately. And more importantly, no matter the reasons behind it, the behavior is the behavior, and Roethlisberger still has to be accountable for it, and still has the responsibility to change it.

Patriots disappoint some wide-eyed youngsters

NFL legend Lawrence Taylor accused of rape

UPDATE IV: Taylor's lawyer denies everything, and police say Taylor was very cooperative through the whole ordeal. Ramapo police say there's no evidence suggesting that Taylor's the one who caused the injuries to the girl. Another man, Rasheed Davis, 36, was also arrested and he is believed to have driven the girl to Taylor's hotel room and forced her to have sex with him. The official charges against Taylor are soliciting a prostitute and third-degree rape. In the state of New York, it's considered third degree rape when a person over the age of 21 has sex with someone under the age of 17.

UPDATE III: Another TMZ story quotes Taylor's wife as saying that this is all a set-up. She's not exactly an unbiased observer, but still, I don't think we can completely shut out the "set-up" theory. This is all really weird.

UPDATE II: The AP report says that Taylor has not been formally charged.

UPDATE: TMZ is reporting that police have found a condom in the hotel room where the alleged attack took place. They say the girl is 16 years old and was reported as a "runaway" a couple of months ago. Also according to the TMZ report, the girl had a pimp who was arrested, and she also had a "fresh" black eye, though it's not clear who gave it to her.

---

According to LoHud.com, legendary New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor has been arrested and charged with raping a 15-year-old girl in Ramapo, NY.

The news is just breaking and details vary at the moment. A text alert from ESPN said that Taylor was arrested, but not yet charged, and they make no mention of the age of the girl. The LoHud.com report says that Taylor has indeed been charged, and provides a couple more details:

He was charged with third-degree rape, a charge that involves having intercourse with a minor. The victim was reportedly beaten during the attack.

The crime took place at the Holiday Inn of Suffern, located in Montebello, according to Ramapo police Detective Lt. Brad Weidel.

Taylor, of course, does not have a squeaky-clean image and has been in trouble with the law before. He tested positive for cocaine in 1987 and has been arrested twice for trying to buy drugs from undercover cops.

Obviously, we all hope the allegations aren't true, and we'll keep you updated if more details come to light.

Most gamers have come to get to know Activision. Since they have come out with all kinds of different music games, they often find people waiting for more. Coming up in the fall of this year, two games, that might just interest you, have been sey to release. The two games of Guitar Hero 6 and a second DJ Hero game have been decided that they will be releasing in the fall.

The number of games that Activision has decided to come out with in a year was decreased by a lot in this last year. The great success that their games have had has led to different decisions being made as to how many games need to come out in a year. In the upcoming season this year of the fall, Guitar Hero 6 is going to be released and then the second DJ Hero game has been given a release date that will be just shortly after the release of Guitar Hero 6.

Here is what Activision had to say about their upcoming games, they include “more great original music, new and innovative gameplay modes and a significantly enhanced social gaming experience and plenty of downloadable content.”

49ers lock up Patrick Willis with some creative accounting

There's no doubt that San Francisco 49ers middle linebacker Patrick Willis(notes) is one of the best players at his position in the NFL. Since being picked with the 11th overall selection in the 2007 draft, Willis has transcended what was an initially porous defense, become its on-field leader and helped it become an effective (if underrated) unit. And since Willis' five-year, $16.7 million rookie contract had just one year remaining, it was time for the Niners to fill out an already exceptional offseason by signing their best player to a new deal.

There was only one problem with the compensation -- while Willis deserved to be paid as the star he has become, there's a kink in the NFL's post-CBA landscape called the 30-percent rule. This rule, which kicked in once the NFL went to an uncapped year, states that no renegotiation or extension of a current contract may increase a player's base salary by more than 30 percent. But as Marvin Miller eventually did in defeating the reserve clause in baseball, 49ers chief negotiator Paraag Marathe (one of the new wave of "Moneyball" guys) clearly saw the rule as a series of one-year agreements as opposed to an extending base. Thus, the team could increase Willis' base salary and further fund the new contract by giving him two different signing bonuses.

According to Pro Football Talk, Willis received a first signing bonus of $15.5 million as part of a five-year, $50 million extension (basically, a seven-year, $53.3 million contract). Then, the team got creative by giving Willis a second signing bonus of $4.8 million in 2011. And as PFT's Mike Florio indicated, the second signing bonus is put on a perch with an injury-only guarantee -- this means that the team isn't stuck with funding the payment now.

Contract details aren't generally among the most exciting things in any sport, but in a modern NFL where the new rules are often used to limit players from making what they deserve and fulfilling their financial potential, it's good to see one team using a real knowledge of the situation to lock up a franchise cornerstone. The player is happy, the team is happy, and Roger Goodell is probably annoyed that someone in the NFL is smarter than him. What more could we ask for?

Man behaving badly: SI details lewd, crude Roethlisberger

If Ben Roethlisberger's(notes) reputation wasn't shot before, it will be now.

In a much-hyped cover story that hits newsstands Wednesday, Sports Illustrated details the lewd, rude and classless behavior of the much-maligned Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback. Jack McCallum's article could probably be defined as a hit piece, but it's an entirely fair one. If half of the stuff in the story is true, then Roethlisberger is even scummier than imagined.

The story starts with McCallum telling the tale of a Steeler-loving, heavily tattooed bus driver who is considering putting a red line through the Roethlisberger tattooo which covers his left bicep. It gets a lot worse.

Other highlights include:

• A post-accident Roethlisberger getting videotaped riding on his motorcycle without a helmet and flipping off the camera.

• Roethlisberger pulling the "do you know who I am?" routine with various people.

• Big Ben's nickname for what he wanted to have happen in the bathroom that night in Georgia. (It invokes the name of the president who served before George W. Bush.)

• Classy comments he made to various women, including a pregnant waitress at T.G.I. Friday's.

• Walking out on bar tabs (despite, you know, the $102 million contract).

Go read the whole thing.

It's a fairly reported piece, but there are plenty of bits of information from sources with definite reasons to have an agenda. (What group of underage girls at a bar tells anyone they're not 21?) Defenders of Ben could say that some of the unnamed people quoted in the story could be kicking a man when he's down. However, that would assume that after reading this story, there'll be any people left to defend Ben Roethlisberger.

Coming out soon for the Sony PlayStation Portable is the game that is known as Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. The date at which this game is going to become available to you is on June 8th of this year. In this action game, that has been published by Konami, you need to try to keep the peace throughout the nation without the help of a military.

The following is a preview which has been given to the game:

“I have gotten into the habit of walking into game previews completely blind as of late. Call it tunnel vision, call it too much attention to games when they’re done and sent to me with a shiny plastic case, but I have not been keeping up with Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker as much as my compatriots, and only made slight headway through the downloadable demo. But that did not stop me from attending Konami’s Peace Walker themed “Boot Camp” a few weeks back in San Francisco. Boy, was I in for a surprise.”

Make sure to check out this game again when the release dates is nearer.

Celebrating the really, really long career of Jeff Feagles

New York Giants punter Jeff Feagles has a news conference scheduled for tomorrow. At that conference, he's expected to announce his retirement from the National Football League.

Punter retirements normally aren't terribly significant events in NFL history, but Feagles is a walking football history archive. He's kind of like football's Andy Rooney. He's been around for just about everything.

So, with his retirement pending, let's mark the occasion with the following fun FeaglesFacts:

• In 1988, Feagles' rookie year, John Stephens was the Offensive Rookie of the Year, and Eric McMillan was the Defensive Rookie of the Year. They both retired 17 years ago.

• Feagles holds the following NFL career records: Most consecutive games played, most punts, most punts placed inside the 20-yard-line, most punting yards and most games played.

• Feagles was the last remaining player in the NFL who was in "Tecmo Super Bowl."

• Feagles was also the last remaining player who was active during the Reagan administration.

• In his career, Feagles was 0-for-8 as a passer, and finished with 19 carries for -11 yards.

• On September 4th, 1988, the day Feagles kicked his first punt in the NFL, the number one song in the United Stats was "Monkey," by George Michael. Gas was $1.08 a gallon.

• People who were not yet born when Feagles' first kicked in the NFL include Kevin Durant, Taylor Swift, Patrick Kane and Chris Brown.

• As Feagles hit his first punt in the NFL, the nation was falling in love with The California Raisins, a claymation marketing campaign for the California Raisin Advisory Board.

Enjoy retirement, sir. The world of punting owes you a debt of gratitude.

Pacman Jones has all the partying out of his system

Despite some tepid interest from the Lions a few weeks ago, Pacman Jones remains unemployed and extremely available.

He's so available, in fact, that he's not afraid to text Lions head coach Jim Schwartz and remind him of that fact. From Nicholas J. Cotsonika at the Detroit Free Press:

"I texted him and just told him that I’m still available, I like what they did in the draft," Jones said today in a telephone interview. "It was just a simple text message. And he was like, 'Thanks. Keep your head up and keep the faith.' We left it at that."

I don't know if Pacman should like Detroit's draft too much. After all, they spent a third-rounder on a cornerback, Amari Spievey out of Iowa. Every cornerback on the Detroit roster puts Pacman one step closer to remaining unemployed.

What does he think, that the Lions will want him to come in and tutor the rookie? That he can be of value to the Lions as Spievey's wise old mentor? He might get back into the league, but I don't think he's quite at the "mentor" stage yet.

Anyway, Pacman also addressed the chief reason why he doesn't have a job yet: the omni-present character questions. He assures us that he's past that part of his life.

"I don’t do the things that I used to do," Jones said. "I don’t hang out with the crowd that I used to. I’m a grown man now. I have a little girl. I have a fiancĂ©e with another baby on the way. So them days are over with, the kid days. It’s about my family now."

Walter Jones, Seattle's nine-time Pro Bowl tackle, retires

Thursday, the greatest player in Seattle Seahawks history -- and the last tie to the amazing tackle classes of the late 1990s -- retired from the game. Walter Jones, the nine-time Pro Bowler and four-time First-Team All-Pro announced that he can no longer play the game he's graced since 1997. Various injuries prevented Jones from playing at all in the 2009 season, and with the selection of Oklahoma State tackle Russell Okung with the sixth overall pick, there was also the quick draft weekend announcement from Seattle GM John Schneider that a statement would be made in the following days about Jones' future. Now, we know what we previously suspected.

Having watched Jones since his early days, when he came to the NFL about the same time as Orlando Pace and Jonathan Ogden, I'll remember him as the player who forged my interest in offensive line play. I will especially remember his week-to-week play in the Seahawks' 2005 season, when he nearly guided his formerly moribund team to a Lombardi Trophy with a series of superhuman performances. If you can find a video clip of Jones taking Carolina Panthers defensive end Mike Rucker and riding him back about 15 yards on a Shaun Alexander run in the NFC Championship game at the same speed Alexander was running ... well, it was the damnedest play I'd ever seen. (Update: In this official tribute video released by the Seahawks, the Rucker block is three minutes in). In my opinion, Alexander was a miscast MVP that season -- Jones was by far the best player in the NFL in 2005, and the award should have been his. As perhaps the one 9,000-plus-yard rusher more dependent on great line play than any other, Alexander would certainly agree.

But the unheralded nature of his position suited Walter Jones -- he's always been a gentle giant who laughed at pain (a kidney condition prevents him from taking any painkiller stronger than Tylenol) and shrugged off the conga line of defenders who wanted to make their bones by taking the big man down. I'll never forget what he did to Falcons end Patrick Kerney in the second game of the 2005 season. Kerney was a Pro Bowler coming off a 13-sack season, one of the most dynamic pass rushers in the game. By the second quarter of his "battle" against Big Walt, Kerney was a spent, wheezing mess. He was one of many elite defenders to receive a lesson in advanced protection concepts from this graceful and humble technician.

Perhaps former Seahawks and current Colts line coach Howard Mudd, who pushed for Jones to be drafted by Seattle with the sixth overall pick in 1997, said it best when he reflected on Jones' legacy:

"He had this phenomenal athleticism. Walt is the kind of guy who does things so easily, it almost looks like he's playing at 75 or 80 percent. Like Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods, he never really struggles to get his job done, even when he's playing against the top NFL players. I don't think he ever lined up in a game where he thought he was closely matched, athletically, to the guy across from him."

Once the announcement is made, and he says a few perfunctory words, Jones will probably go back to his hometown of Aliceville, Alabama, where he used to push Escalades as a form of off-season conditioning and start the countdown to Canton. But the city of Seattle will always remember him.

It was once said of Jim Brown that there are many superstars but only one Superman. It was my good fortune to watch Walter Jones ply his trade for over a decade -- and to understand, for a time, what Superman actually looked like.

Al Davis apparently clinging to his faith in JaMarcus Russell

Despite the report a couple of days ago that the Raiders were about to release JaMarcus Russell, it hasn't happened yet.

I'll give you one guess as to the identity of the man in the Oakland organization who is blocking this perfectly rational football move. Hint: It's the same guy who has blocked every other rational football move in recent Oakland Raiders history.

No, it's not this awesome guy. It's Raiders owner Al Davis.

Here's FanHouse's Nancy Gay on what's happening with Russell right now.

"While there has been overriding support in the Raiders organization to release Russell and thereby absolve the franchise from $6.45 million in 2010 salary liability should the maligned former starting quarterback injure himself on their property during the minicamp, any personnel move falls under owner Al Davis' thumb. And that makes it anyone's guess."

"Things change by the minute here," one Raiders source said Wednesday when asked for the latest update on Russell's status.

"Don't know anymore," another team source said.

And here's the NFL Network's Michael Lombardi:

"One person, Al Davis, the owner of the Oakland Raiders, is the only person who's going to make this decision. The organization wants to get rid of JaMarcus Russell, the sentiment within the organization is to get rid of JaMarcus Russell, and the dollar signs are there to get rid of JaMarcus Russell. And it will happen. But it's only going to happen on the owner's timetable. Nobody's going to tell him when to do it, or how to do it. When he wakes up one morning and decides he wants to release JaMarcus Russell, that's when it will happen."

I guess when you get to be Al Davis's age and you feel like paying a guy $9.45 million to sit and watch Raiders games, then you have every right to do just that. That doesn't make it a good idea, and it might not make one damn bit of sense ... but you can do it.

Whatever makes you happy, Al.
