NFL voices dot SI's list of greatest all-time sportscasters

Sports Illustrated put together a slideshow of the "Top 20 All-Time Sportscasters." Most of the people on the list have worked NFL games at one point or another, but below are five in particular who are strongly linked with the NFL.

#20. John Madden. It's a little surprising that Madden isn't higher, but this list tends to skew towards play-by-play guys, as opposed to color analysts. Through the years, Madden made himself into America's default voice of professional football, and I doubt we'll ever have a more famous or more recognizable football commentator than him.

#15. Marv Albert. Marv is known as more of an NBA guy, of course, but I list him here because I think his NFL work on the radio is outstanding, and if he ever did have a high-profile network NFL gig, I'm certain that he'd be just as good there as he is in the NBA.

#14. Dick Enberg. Dick Enberg started calling NFL games on NBC in 1977 and is still going. He's called eight Super Bowls in his career.

#13. Al Michaels. Michaels and Cris Collinsworth currently call the unofficial "game of the week" on Sunday nights on NBC, and before that, Michaels called the shots when "Monday Night Football" was the biggest game of the week. I wouldn't call him a personal favorite of mine, but given his longevity and the sheer number of huge sporting events he's called, he's a natural for this list.

#9. Howard Cosell. Cosell's heyday was before my time, so I don't have a lot of perspective to offer here. Cosell gets a lot of credit for changing the world of commentary, adding more color and personality to the events.

It's a fine list, and obviously, extremely subjective. If you ask 100 sports fans to do something similar, you'll get 100 different lists. Everyone's got their own unique likes and dislikes.

I will say that I'd have liked to see Pat Summerall's name somewhere in the top 20. Everyone goes crazy today for Gus Johnson's super-emotional approach to things, and while I don't mind that, I think there's also something to be said for Summerall's bare essentials approach. He was the perfect complement to Madden, and vice versa.

Aside from that, I have few complaints about the list. I'd like to hear what you guys think, though, about NFL guys who should or shouldn't have made the list.
